Where Life is Beautiful

Jewelry box from the wood carving craftsmen of Muradabad in India. These gifts have been created by making innovative use of saree printing blocks.

Jewelry boxes in Indian tradition are as uniquely carved as the jewelry itself. They are beautifully carved, ornamented with in lay work or painted. Usually they are made of wood, metal or paper mache. However, the most popular are the ones made of wood. They are produced in Saharnpur, Uttar Pradesh with innovative designs and motifs. The most unique ones are those made of carved wooden blocks that are used for block printing on cloth. Using them as the lid, these boxes are made to match their shapes. The inside of these boxes have a thin velvet lining, meant to protect the ornaments. Some also come with locking provision. They have a typical look of the traditional treasure boxes. These block come in various shapes and sizes. The carving on them is done very intricately and patiently using different types of chisels.
